Formulation of a bio-packaging based on pure cellulose coupled with cellulose acetate treated with active coating: Evaluation of shelf life of pasta ready to eat

This article investigates a bio-based food packaging system that combines pure cellulose with cellulose acetate and an active antimicrobial coating. The study focuses on developing a compostable packaging material for ready-to-eat tomato pasta by incorporating 4-hydroxybenzoate into layered double hydroxides, which act as carriers for controlled release.

The authors examine the structure and release behavior of the antimicrobial system, evaluate its effectiveness against common food-spoilage microorganisms, and assess compliance with food-contact migration requirements. 

The results show that cellulose acetate-based packaging can provide sustained antimicrobial activity when the active compound is immobilized within layered double hydroxides, resulting in a slower and more controlled release than conventional coatings. The packaging significantly inhibited microbial growth, reduced mold development, maintained product quality during refrigerated storage, and extended the estimated shelf life of ready-to-eat pasta from about 21 to 55 days. Migration tests confirmed compliance with applicable regulatory limits, supporting the suitability of the cellulose acetate packaging system for food-contact applications. These findings highlight the potential of cellulose acetate in sustainable active packaging designs that improve food preservation, reduce waste, and support the development of environmentally responsible packaging solutions.
