Biodegradation of Cellulose Acetate
Drawing on standardized biodegradation studies and scientific literature, the article also explains the biological mechanisms involved, the role of microbial communities, and the factors that influence degradation rates and environmental fate.
The evidence reviewed shows that cellulose diacetate is biodegradable across multiple microbially active environments and does not exhibit the persistence typically associated with conventional plastics. The article highlights that naturally occurring microorganisms can adapt to cellulose acetate with a degree of substitution of 2.5 and that extensive abiotic deacetylation is not required before biodegradation begins. These findings are important for sustainability assessments, regulatory evaluations, and product development because they improve understanding of the long-term environmental behavior of cellulose acetate and support informed decisions regarding its use in applications where biodegradability and responsible end-of-life performance are relevant considerations.
