Cellulose acetate-based materials for water treatment in the context of circular economy
The review highlights that cellulose acetate membranes can achieve enhanced separation performance when modified with nanoparticles, functional molecules, or complementary polymers, enabling improved pollutant removal, antifouling behavior, and membrane durability. The authors conclude that cellulose acetate offers significant potential for supporting water reuse and resource efficiency, key objectives of circular economy strategies. At the same time, challenges related to mechanical performance, fouling resistance, large-scale functionalization, and long-term process efficiency remain important areas for further development.
